How the solver works

A Spelling Bee word has at least four letters, uses only the seven letters of the puzzle and always contains the center letter. Letters may repeat, so with A, E, L, N, R, T around a center P you can make both PLANT and PEPPER. The solver checks every word in our dictionaries against these rules.

The common words are about 40,000 words found in standard American and British dictionaries, the kind the official game tends to accept: on recent puzzles this list contained about four out of five official answers. The rarer words come from our full list of more than 140,000 words, which includes old, technical and specialist words. The New York Times decides its own word list every day, so the solver can show a word the official game rejects, and very new words can be missing.

Scoring

Four-letter words are worth 1 point. Longer words score 1 point per letter, and a pangram, a word that uses all seven letters, adds 7 points. The total above counts the common words only.
